SALKANTAY WITH INKA TRAIL 7 Days
If you have a little more time to visit Cusco and experience hiking and camping in the Andes, then this is your best option. It will be an amazing hike to Machu Picchu, where you can enjoy the green landscapes that the Andes of Peru offer, along with glacier peaks, lagoons, rivers, cloud forests, Inca sites, Inca villages, and the cherry on top is arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate on foot after 6 days of activity.
Basically, for the first 4 days, you will be hiking in the Salkantay area, known as off the beaten path with fewer crowds. Of course, this route is not the classic Salkantay route; instead, it’s another trail that leads to the Inca Trail, so there will always be fewer people along the way. Then, on day 4 of the hike, you will enter the classic Inca Trail. You’ll even arrive close to the first campsite of the classic Inca Trail on the first night. The hike will continue along the classic Inca Trail until the Machu Picchu day.

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake – Salkantaypampa
We will pick you up at 05:00 am for your Inca Trail 7 Days. Today is a fairly easy day to help us ease into the trek. Our tour begins by visiting the important Inca site of Tarawasi which lies about 2 hours drive from Cusco. After we finish looking around the area, we’ll head over to Mollepata to take a break and stretch our legs. After that, we’ll continue to Soraypampa, where we’ll enjoy a tasty breakfast before starting our 7-day Salkantay & Inca Trail adventure. From Soraypampa, we’ll trek to Humantay Lake, which will take about 2 hours. We should arrive at the lake around 1 pm, after most day-trippers have left, giving us the lake all to ourselves. After enjoying the lake, we’ll hike back to Soraypampa and then continue to our campsite at Salkantaypampa. There, we’ll have lunch and the rest of the afternoon free to relax and prepare for the next day.

Our journey will commence with flat terrain for about 10 minutes before transitioning into a challenging uphill climb. This segment of the trail is steep and demanding, so we’ll proceed at a comfortable pace since our destination is only 4 hours away. Along the hike, you’ll admire the Humantay glacier to your left and the majestic Salkantay directly ahead.
Upon reaching our campsite, known as Pampa Japonesa, we’ll enjoy our lunch before embarking on an afternoon exploration of Salkantay Lake, which typically takes 2 to 3 hours. This will bring us in close proximity to the Salkantay glacier. Following our lake excursion, we’ll return to camp. Pampa Japonesa offers an incredible vantage point to soak in the beauty of the Soraypampa Valley, providing ample opportunities for breathtaking photos of the Salkantay glacier. Upon reaching the summit, we’ll have the option to either take a 30-minute hike closer to the glacier or descend to our lunch spot.

With luck, we may encounter various wildlife such as Viscachas (resembling rabbit-like Chinchillas), White-Tailed Deer, and perhaps even some of the elusive Andean creatures like Condors.
After reaching the Pass, we’ll enjoy a three-hour downhill trek to our lunch destination, YanaCcaca, where our skilled cook eagerly awaits us with a delectable meal. We categorize Salkantay with inka trail 7 days as ‘demanding’ mainly due to its elevation rather than challenging terrain. HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR HEIGHT AND AVOID ALTITUDE SICKNESS?
In order to avoid the altitude sickness, we highly recommend you to arrive in cusco at least 2 days in advance. The first day, walk around the city visiting some museum, local market or you take a City tour to visit some inca site located outside of Cusco. The second day, you can hike to Cristo Blanco. It is 3 km from Cusco and it is uphill there you will see how fit you are or you can take the Sacred valley to visit some inca site.
Also on the first day, try to eat soft food, not heavy food. If you eat a lot, instead the oxygen goes to your brain, it will go to the stomach then you might get altitude sickness.
