PALLAY PUNCHU MOUNTAIN
Pallay Puncho Mountain, also known as Apu Taqllo or Pallay Puncho del Apu Taqllo, is a striking natural wonder located in the Layo district of the Canas province, in the Cusco region of Peru. This colorful mountain, discovered by travelers only in recent years, captivates visitors with its dramatic layers of vibrant red, green, and ochre tones, created by natural mineral deposits. Rising to about 4,700 meters (15,400 feet) above sea level, Pallay Puncho offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Andean landscape and the nearby Langui-Layo Lagoon. Its unique “poncho-like” shape, which resembles the traditional woven clothing of the Andean people, symbolizes cultural pride and connection to Pachamama (Mother Earth), making it a stunning and sacred destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.
Come and uncover the mystery of Pallay Puncho Mountain — where colors, culture, and the spirit of the Andes unite in one breathtaking view.
Full Day Tour to Pallay Puncho Mountain – “The Rainbow Poncho of the Andes”
Your adventure to Pallay Puncho Mountain begins early in the morning with a scenic drive from Cusco toward the Canas province, passing through traditional Andean villages, golden valleys, and high-altitude landscapes. After about 4 to 5 hours, you’ll reach the Layo district, near the beautiful Langui-Layo Lagoon, where the hike begins.
The trek, lasting around 1.5 to 2 hours, gradually ascends along paths surrounded by llamas and alpacas, with stunning views of the lagoon shimmering below. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a spectacle of colors — until finally, the striking Pallay Puncho Mountain reveals itself, displaying its natural layers of red, green, and ochre hues shaped like a traditional Andean poncho.
At the summit, around 4,700 meters (15,400 ft) above sea level, you’ll have time to rest, take photos, and soak in the silence and energy of this sacred place, often described as one of Peru’s newest natural treasures. After exploring and enjoying a boxed lunch with panoramic views, the descent begins, followed by the drive back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.
This full-day journey combines breathtaking nature, local culture, and mystery — an unforgettable experience for those seeking to go beyond the usual trails and discover one of the Andes’ most hidden gems.

THINGS TO KNOW
- Higher elevation also means colder, nearly freezing temperatures, so be prepared. Whether you decide to take a one-day tour, make sure to wear very warm clothes. Also bring coca leaves to fight off altitude sickness and carry the minimum gear possible to ease the hike.
- Try to go all the way to the viewpoint. You get a 360° view not just a rainbow Mountain, but of the nearby lake and a gorgeous valley in the other direction. We think most people didn’t realize what they were missing by not going all the way up.
- The best time to visit the Pallay Punchu Mountain is going to be in the morning or evening hours, either right after sunrise, or right before sunset.
- The hike to the top is no joke. Constantly changing weather conditions, combined with high altitude, can be a challenge for experienced hikers. But if done right it’s manageable even for those who don’t hike much.
- Don’t go to the Pallay Punchu Mountain in the afternoon in the rainy season because of lighting. Since the high concentration of mineral. There is a high chance to get stricken by lighting.
- When you go to the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, you’ll find tons of agencies that offer this same tour “cheap” but remember: you get what you pay for. In many cases, some agencies may charge much less but will send you on a tour where the groups are 25, 35 more tourists and one guide. We offer our exclusive service tour where the minimum is 2 and the maximum is 8 people per group.
OUR RECOMMENDATIONS
- Make sure you are acclimatized to Cusco’s altitude before you set off on your hike to the Pallay Punchu Mountain. This is by far the best insurance for a smooth and enjoyable trip. We recommend you spend at least 2 days in Cusco prior to the excursion.
- Don’t forget wáter!. Drinking lots of water will help with the altitude. We advise bringing at least 2 liters per person on the hike with you and have an extra bottle to leave in the van for when you get back.
- Go to sleep early and try to avoid drinking or partying the night before, because We will pick you up at 03:00 am and the physically challenging trek will be much more bearable without a hangover.
- If you have altitude sickness symptoms, descend as quickly as you can. It’s nothing to mess around with.
- If you are going to Machu Picchu the day before your trip to the Pallay Punchu Mountain, tell your travel company to book your return train ticket early.

Tips for our staff
Tipping is the standard in any excursion in Peru. Although we pay good salaries to our team, something extra is always welcome.
Additional costs or delays beyond our control
This includes the occurrence of events such as landslides, adverse weather conditions, itinerary changes for safety reasons, illnesses, pandemics, changes in government policies, political instability, strikes, force majeure, and similar situations. In most cases, we guarantee your tickets and full logistics in advance—paying ahead for permits, schedules, accommodations, supplies, and even staff mobilization to ensure everything is ready.
